And the world turns around …”

go the lyrics of She Sells Sanctuary by the band, Cult.

A former war zone in Sri Lanka, where the last battles were fought between Tamil rebels against government forces, is being turned into a sanctuary for the nation’s elephants.

The wild elephant population has dwindled down to 4,000 from 15,000 in the last 100 years. Now over 40,000 hectares in Mullaitivu in northern Sri Lanka, would be used for wildlife conservation.

But first, 1.5 million land mines buried by the Tamil rebels have to be removed.
