The Panera Bread Company is testing out an interesting social experiment. Outside its cafe in Clayton, Mo. a sign reads, “Take what you need, leave your fair share”. Customers are given receipts with a suggested price and directed to five donation boxes. Those who cannot pay are asked to volunteer their time.
A second shop has opened in one of the hardest hit cities in the US – Dearborn, Michigan – just in time for Christmas. If Clayton’s story is repeated in Dearborn, 20% of patrons would pay more than the suggested price, 60% would pay the same and 20% would pay less.
What would you pay if you bought yourself a sandwich at the Panera Bread Company?
